What is an SFP module
SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) is a standardized hot-swappable transceiver that plugs into a port of a switch, router or media converter and handles the physical transmission of data over fiber optics or twisted-pair copper cable.
In simple terms, an SFP is like a removable adapter between the "brain" of the network device and the cable. The device itself is not tied to the cable type: need an optical link for 20 km — insert an optical SFP; need a short copper connection — insert a copper SFP. Thanks to this, one switch works with any transmission medium.
What it consists of and how it works
The module contains a laser or LED transmitter, a photo-receiver and a controller chip. It converts the electrical signal from the device into an optical (light) signal for transmission and back for reception. The base SFP speed is up to 1.25 Gbit/s (designated as 1G).
How to choose an SFP module
Consider three parameters: media type (single-mode or multi-mode fiber, twisted pair), reach (from 100 m to 120 km) and wavelength (850 nm for MMF, 1310/1550 nm for SMF). Compatibility with the equipment matters too: most vendors allow third-party compatible modules, but for critical sites certified solutions are preferable.

What is the difference between SFP and SFP+?
SFP runs at up to 1.25 Gbit/s (1G), while SFP+ runs at up to 10 Gbit/s (10G). Their form factors are the same, so an SFP+ port physically accepts an ordinary SFP too, but at a reduced speed. For 10G and higher channels use SFP+.
Can I use SFP modules from different manufacturers?
In most cases yes — compatible SFP modules work with Cisco, D-Link, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and other vendors' equipment. However, for critical sites of government agencies and CII facilities it is better to use certified Russian solutions so as not to depend on supplies.
Which SFP do I need for 10 km of fiber?
For single-mode fiber (OS2) over about 10 km, an SFP with a 1310 nm wavelength and sufficient transmitter power (usually a module with DDM diagnostics) will do. Take the exact value from the attenuation budget calculation of your line.
