What is an SFP+ module
SFP+ (Enhanced Small Form-factor Pluggable) is an enhanced version of the SFP transceiver that supports data rates up to 10 Gbit/s. It is installed in the ports of switches, routers, servers and storage systems and is used in data centers, carriers, banking and enterprise networks everywhere 10G channels are required.
In simple terms, SFP+ is the same compact SFP form factor, but four times faster. You keep the same port sizes and patching habits, while getting a 10G channel per module — this makes modernizing a network from 1G to 10G a matter of replacing modules and switching equipment rather than rebuilding cabling.
What it consists of and how it works
The module contains a laser or LED transmitter, a photo-receiver and a controller. For 10G optical lines, transmitters with narrower spectral characteristics are used, and the circuits support encoding typical for 10G Ethernet. Digital diagnostics (DDM/DOM) monitor temperature, voltage, transmit and receive power in real time.
How to choose an SFP+ module
Define the media (single-mode or multi-mode fiber, or direct-attach copper for short links), reach (from 0.5 m on a DAC cable to 40–100 km on optics) and wavelength (850 nm for MMF, 1310/1550 nm for SMF).
