What is a media converter

A media converter (medium converter) is a device that receives a signal from one cable type (for example, fiber) and outputs it on another (twisted pair), and vice versa, without changing the data.

In simple terms, it is a translator between two network languages: optics "speaks" light, while a switch at the other end "understands" copper. The media converter performs the translation at the junction.

How to choose a media converter

Determine the input and output (MM/SM optics, reach, wavelength ↔ RJ-45, speed 10/100/1000M). For critical sites choose managed converters with link monitoring (Link Fault Pass-Through) and rack-mount capability. Consider power — an external PSU or PoE is often required.
