What is QSFP

QSFP (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable) is a transceiver with four independent data transmission channels. The QSFP+ version delivers a total of 40 Gbit/s (4×10G), and QSFP28 — 100 Gbit/s (4×25G).

In simple terms, QSFP is like a four-lane highway instead of a single lane: data travels in parallel along four lanes, and the total throughput grows by multiples. It is the standard for trunk lines between top-tier switches and the network core.

How it works and where it is used

QSFP28 uses SR4 optics (multi-mode, up to 100 m), LR4 (single-mode, up to 10 km) or PSM4/CWDM4. It is used in the data center core, carrier networks, high-performance computing clusters and when building 100G backbones.

How to choose QSFP

Define the target speed (40G or 100G), the optics type and the distance. Breakout cables QSFP28-to-4×SFP28 are often used to connect one 100G port to four 25G devices. Check the switch's supported speed.
