What is a network switch
A switch is the central device of a local area network. It receives data frames on its ingress ports and forwards them only to the intended recipient, not to everyone like the old hub did.
In simple terms, a switch is a dispatcher at a sorting station: it reads who the packet is addressed to and sends it along the right path without clogging the other lines. This way the network works fast and without collisions.
Managed and unmanaged
An unmanaged switch simply powers on and works (for home or a small office). A managed switch allows configuring VLANs, traffic priorities, link aggregation and monitoring — a necessity for corporate networks and the government sector.
L2, L3 and how to choose
An L2 switch operates at the data link layer (by MAC addresses), an L3 switch can route between subnets (by IP). For access, take a managed L2 with PoE; for the core, an L3. Consider the port count (24/48), SFP/SFP+ uplinks and trunk port speeds.
